The Steering Committee for the IEEE Transactions of Medical Imaging, under the scope of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society and the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society, is undertaking a search for the next Editor-In-Chief.  The Transactions publishes papers in all areas of biomedical imaging and publishes over 300 of the over  2800 submissions it receives each year and is among the most highly cited of all biomedical imaging journals, serving a diverse and truly world wide community of scientists and engineers.

The Editor position is a substantive commitment for a three-year term and is renewable for an additional three years.  The term of appointment will start 1 January 2025.  At the time of appointment, the successful applicant must be a member in good standing of IEEE and at least one of the member societies.  S/he must have served as an associate editor or in a management capacity for an archival journal.  

Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate the scientific vision needed for advancing the world’s leading comprehensive biomedical imaging journal, the editorial experience to raise the journal’s intellectual quality, innovation and impact, as well as the management skills to be responsive to the evolutions of the biomedical imaging community which demands both timeliness and quality of review.  A strong interest and understanding of the day-to-day management of a journal is critical to success.

The duties include the identification of associate editors to serve across the scope of the Transactions; management of the day-to-day operations of the Transactions through Manuscript Central with the assistance of publications staff; monitoring of quality and timeliness of publications; identification of areas that require strengthening; and working with the Sponsoring Societies and their Technical Committees to achieve that goal.  

The Editor-in-Chief reports to the Steering Committee.  S/he chairs the Editorial Board for the Transactions and meets at least annually with the Steering Committee.  The Editor-in-Chief is expected to actively and regularly contribute to decisions about publication policies and priorities. Desirable qualities are: solid technical accomplishments, leadership, integrity and ethical standards, organizational and management skills, and eagerness to continue to move the journals forward to higher levels of accomplishment.  A statement of support from the candidate’s home institution is welcome.
